Left Handers Day is celebrated every year on August 13 with an aim to raise awareness about the everyday issues that lefties face in a world that is primarily designed for right-handers. Some people also take this as an opportunity to tell her friends and family how proud you are of being left-handed. 

The Left-Handers Club was formed in 1990 to promote research into left-handedness and development of new items for the lefties. Two years after the formation, the Club launched International Left-Handers Day to make the public aware of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed.

Some of the basic everyday struggles of lefties include using scissors, playing some sports, finding a lefty friendly desk and playing guitar.

On the occasion of 30th Left Handers Day, here are some fun facts about lefties – 

1. Eight former presidents of the United States were left-handed including, James Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

2. There other terms used for left-handed people are Sinister (Latin for left), Mollydooker (Australian slang term) and Southpaw (name for a left-handed pitcher).

3. Left-handers make up 10% of the world’s population.

4. 1 in 4 Apollo astronauts were lefties.

5. The most number of left-handed people can be found in countries like Australia and New Zealand.

6. Lowest rate of left-handedness is found in Asia, Africa and South America.

7. Research has shown that lefties adjust easier to seeing underwater.

8. Studies have shown that left-handed people are better drivers.

9. Left-handed people usually reach puberty 4 to 5 months after right-handers, studies have shown.

10. Several global leaders are left-handers, including Barack Obama, Narendra Modi, Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey.
