United States President Joe Biden said that his national security team had been instructed to “offer all appropriate assistance” to the security forces of Iraq while they investigate an attack on Mustafa al-Kadhimi, the Prime Minister of the middle eastern nation.

The statement from the White House on Sunday also expressed the President’s relief about Al-Kadhimi not being injured in the attack that was carried out using a drone, which reportedly tried to hit his home in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone area.

Biden also “strongly condemned” the attack while calling action that would hold those responsible for the incident “accountable”.

He wrote, “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack targeting the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister al-Kadhimi. I am relieved the Prime Minister was not injured and commend the leadership he has shown in calling for calm, restraint, and dialogue to protect the institutions of the state and strengthen the democracy Iraqis so richly deserve.”

The statement added, “The perpetrators of this terrorist attack on the Iraqi state must be held accountable. I condemn in the strongest terms those using violence to undermine Iraq’s democratic process.”

Other world leaders, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, also joined Biden’s efforts to condemn the attack earlier on Sunday, according to reports from AFP.

India took similar steps on Sunday as Arindam Bagchi, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, said in a statement, “Terrorism and violence have no place in any civilised society. They cannot be allowed to undermine peace and stability in Iraq”, according to reports from PTI.

The security statement released by Iraq’s state-run media said the failed assassination attempt was with “a booby-trapped drone that tried to target his residence in the Green Zone.” The statement added that he was not harmed and was in good health.
