Greece’s Maria Sakkari will face Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikovain in the semifinal of the Roland Garros 2021. This is the first time, the two players have gone past the quarterfinals of Grand Slams. 17th seeded Sakkari won against the reigning champion Iga Swiatek, and the unseeded Krejcikova won against American Coco Gauff, in the quarterfinals.

Sakkari is the highest-ranked player left in the women’s category of French Open 2021. In what has been a tournament filled with upsets and rising stars, it is guaranteed that there will be a new French Open champion. 

The Greek won against Swiatek won against the two finalists of the 2020 edition of the tournament in the last two rounds, both in straight sets. 6-1, 6-3 against Sofia Kenin in the fourth round, and 6-4, 6-4 against Swiatek.

Krejcikova is a prominent player in the doubles section, having won five majors. But her best performance in singles has come in this tournament. She won 7-6(6), 6-3 in the quarterfinal against Gauff. She also faced US Open 2017 champion Sloane Stephens, and sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina along the way to the semifinal.

Apart from Sakkari’s encounter against 14th seed Elise Mertens in the third round, where she won 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, she has not dropped a set on her road to the semifinal. 

Krejcikova recently won her first-ever WTA singles title at Strasbourg and entered Roland Garros with momentum on her side. She has carried the confidence all the way till the semifinal. 

On Krejcikova’s road to the semifinal, she faced Karolina Pliskova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Elina Svitolina, Sloane Stephens and Coco Gauff.

On Sakkari’s road to the semifinal, she faced Katarina Zavatska, JasminePaolini, Elise Mertens, Sloane Stephens and Iga Swiatek.
