Matthew McConaughey, the actor born in Uvalde, Texas, released a dramatic black and white clip, on Friday, asking for a bipartisan approach to gun control. The ‘True Detective‘ actor’s recent push comes after the Robb Elementary School shooting in his hometown, which left 19 children and two adults dead. 

The 52-year-old met with over 30 officials to bring about a change in the nation’s gun laws. The clip shows the Texan meeting lawmakers from both the Republican and Democrat camps, including Senators Joe Manchin, Kyrsten Sinema, Lindsey Graham, Cory Booker, Representatives Jerry Nadler, and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, as well as White House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and President Joe Biden. 

“This is and was about gun responsibility” the video states in typed letters. It adds, “This is about mental health, safer schools … and keeping guns out of the irresponsible hands that, by rule of law, still have access to them today. The solution must come from both sides.” 

The Oscar-winner already delivered an impassioned speech at the White House, calling for more background checks, red flags, and a greater focus on responsible gun ownership.

“For ourselves, our children, Republicans, Democrats and our fellow Americans, it’s time to be responsible”, the clip concluded. 

This echoes the actor’s calls during the speech, when he said “These regulations are not a step back, they’re a step forward for a civil society and the second amendment”, continuing in the 20-minute monologue, “Is this a cure all? Hell no. But people are hurting, families are, parents are.”

While McConaughey is a supporter of the Second Amendment, he said he learned about “responsible gun ownership” during his time in Uvalde, where he lived until the age of 12. 

The actor has also reached out to DC lobbying firm Avisa Partners, to represent his interests in responsible gun ownership, in Washington, as per Politico. 

McConaughey also spoke out on the day of the shooting and has visited the memorial for the victims and met with their families.
