In an
appalling incident reported from New Zealand’s Waihi Beach, a 19-year-old girl
died after a suspected shark attack on Thursday, reported CNN.

“Initial indications suggest she may have been injured by a shark,” New Zealand police said in a news release Thursday.

According to local police officials, the girl was grievously wounded while in the waters off Waihi Beach and succumbed to injuries shortly after.

The New Zealand police managed to identify the woman as Kaelah Marlow upon further investigation. She hailed from the city of Hamilton, about 391 kilometers (243 miles) from the capital Wellington.

Considering the traumatic implications of the incident on the revelers who were present at the site of the horrific shark assault, police has offered to provide victim Support services to anyone who requires it.

An investigation into the matter is underway and the case has been referred to the coroner for now.

In one such similar attack, a man has died after being attacked by a shark at a popular beach in Australia’s northwest coast earlier in November.

There have been at least 22 shark attacks in the same period, according to the Taronga Conservation Society Australia government agency.
