The first One Day International slated
to be played between South Africa and England in the Newlands in Cape Town on
Friday has been postponed after a South Africa player tested positive for
COVID-19, reported AFP.

Cricket South Africa announced the same about
an hour before the match was about to begin.

According to a statement from both the
South African board as well as England and Wales Cricket Board, the unnamed
South African player’s COVID-19 positive status emerged from tests conducted after
the Proteas’ final scheduled practice on Thursday.

According to AFP, the statement cited
the postponement to be “in the interests of the safety and well-being of both
teams, match officials and all involved in the match.”

The first match, as a result of the
postponement, will be conducted in Paarl on Sunday, when the second match was
scheduled.

The second match, as a result would be
conducted on Monday in Newlands, and series would finally be concluded in Newlands
with another day-night match on Wednesday.

The series, partially, will make up International
Cricket Council’s World Cup Super League.
