Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11 to honour military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. A federal holiday, Veterans Day was previously known as Armistice Day. Veterans Day is observed on the day when World War I ended in 1918. To honour the heroes, here are some of the best war movies of all time.

‘All Quiet on the Western Front’

This 1930 movie is one of the first films to show the sad effects of war. Lewis Milestone’s anti-war picture still holds relevance after so many years. The film shows the many moments of World War I from a German soldier’s point of view. This film does not glorify war but only shows the ugliness it holds.

‘The Best Years of Our Lives’

The 1946 movie releases after the end of World War II shows the difficult moments a soldier faces when he returns home from war. The picture follows 3 men returning from war as they deal with their own personal demons.

‘Mister Roberts’

This 1955 drama adapted from a Broadway play follows a Navy cargo ship that has never seen action. It is captained by a person who things too highly of himself. The movie revolves around Henry Fonda who tries to act as a liaison between the captain and the crew.

‘The Great Escape’

Produced in 1963, this is probably the most entertaining depiction of war when it comes to film. From great performances to the fast pace and memorable score, the film excels at showing the whole picture of World War II.

‘The Battle of Algiers’

Produced in 1966, this is one of the greatest foreign war movies ever made. This is a joint production between Italian and French film studios. This picture shows a civil rebellion during the Algerian War in North Africa in the early 1960s.
