Premier League giants Manchester United held off a resilient Wolverhampton Wanderers and finally managed to defeat them 1-0, to extend their run without a league defeat on the road to 28 games. This is the longest a team has gone without an away defeat in any division of English football.

Mason Greenwood scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute, assisted by recently signed Rafael Varane, who was making his United and Premier League debut.

United are without an away defeat in the league since January 2020, last being on the losing side at Anfield against Liverpool. The Red Devils broke the record of 27 games without an away league defeat held by Arsenal‘s invincible side.

Wolves started the game on a high-flying note with Adama Traore and Francisco Trincao on either flank constantly asking tough questions from the United defence. The Red Devils were constantly caught out in the midfield and faced constant counter-attacks. Aaron Wan-Bisaka cleared a ball from the goal line, Varane and captain Harry Maguire constantly dealt with crosses from both sides of the pitch. Wolves did everything right apart from scoring, a scenario eerily similar to their defeat to Tottenham last week.

United’s need for a central defensive midfielder was on display again as Fred could not keep up with the physicality and pace of the Wolves forwards and had to be constantly bailed out by the defence.

This was United manager Ole Gunnar Solksjar‘s hundredth game in charge of a game in the Premier League. Only 9 managers have achieved a feat of helming 100 games for Manchester United in the top flight, with Solksjaer being the first since Sir Alex Furguson to reach the milestone. The Norwegian has won the second most number of games for the club in the first 100 games at 53. Only Ernest Mangnall has won more at 54.

Wolves are yet to find the net in the Premier League this season, with the team losing all their 3 games with a 1-0 scoreline so far.
