Manchester United’s Premier League encounter against arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday was postponed after fans stormed the club’s Old Trafford stadium and held demonstrations against its American owners, the Glazers family

In a statement, the club said, “Following discussion between the police, the Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today.”

“Our fans are passionate about Manchester United and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.”

“However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff and the police in danger. We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations.”

The match was scheduled to kick-off at 4:30 pm local time (9:00 IST) but was delayed for over an hour before the decision to call it off was confirmed.

The Premier League also condemned the violence in a statement, saying, “The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance. We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches.”

Manchester City could have been crowned Premier League champions for the third time in four years and the fifth time overall if Liverpool went on to win. However, their coronation will have to wait for now.

A rescheduled time for the fiture has not been confirmed yet.

“Liverpool Football Club was in full agreement with the decision to postpone today’s fixture as a result of ongoing events at Old Trafford and the surrounding area,” defending champions Liverpool said in a statement.

United fans broke into the club’s Old Trafford stadium and held demostrations against its American owners, the Glazers family. Fans have been particularly angry since the club launched a failed attempt to join the breakaway European Super League.

United and Liverpool were among the integral members of the lucrative league. Since the fallout from the ESL, United Chief Executive Ed Woodward has resigned from his position. He will continue to serve till December 2021.
