Pulitzer Prizes, which are awarded to media organisations to recognise their contribution towards broadcasting events around the world, were announced on Friday.
The New York Times secured the award the public-service prize, which is being shared by multiple departments of the media outlet, in appreciation of their COVID-19 pandemic coverage. The judges said their coverage was “courageous, prescient and sweeping” helped in filling up the data vacuum.
Associated Press was honoured with two awards on Friday, both of which were presented in the photography category. The feature photography award was awarded to Emilio Morenatti, the chief photographer in the organisation’s Spain office.

The other award, which is named as the breaking news prize for protest coverage, is being shared by 10 renowned photographers of Associated Press.
In recognition of its efforts in covering the killing of George Floyd last year on May 25, The Star Tribune was presented with the breaking news award.
Reuters and The Atlantic will be sharing the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting, which was based on their coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A special citation was given to Darnella Frazier, a teenager who documented the killing of Floyd. The citation was given in recognition of “the crucial role of citizens in journalists’ quest for truth and justice”, reported Bloomberg.

Three reports from BuzzFeed News were awarded in the international reporting category for discovering internment camps and prison infrastructure built by China. Megha Rajagopalan, Alison Killing and Christo Buschek were the recipients of the Pulitzer, reported New York Times.
In addition to the award announcement for media organisations, the Pulitzer Board also highlights the work done in the field of arts in seven subcategories. ‘The Night Watchman’, a novel written by Louise Erdrich, was awarded the fiction prize.
