Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, was reportedly a passenger on a plane that tragically crashed, killing everyone on board, according to Russia’s civil aviation authorities. Before this, the plane, registered to Prigozhin, 62, had allegedly been shot down by air defenses, according to a Wagner-affiliated Telegram group called the Grey Zone. The Grey Zone confirmed Prigozhin’s death later on Wednesday, citing activities they claimed were by someone betraying Russia.

The Russian Ministry for emergency situations stated that the jet crashed in Kuzhenkino, in the Tver area, around 60 miles north of Moscow.

Even though unconfirmed media sources indicated that Prigozhin was connected to the business jet, it was not yet known if he had boarded the aircraft.

Flight monitoring information showed that on Wednesday night, a private aircraft that had been used by Prigozhin and had connections to Wagner departed from Moscow. But in a matter of minutes, the aircraft’s transponder signal vanished. There were no nearby airfields that would have allowed for a safe landing when this signal loss happened in such a remote location. A photograph of smoldering debris with a partial tail number resembling a privately owned company jet went viral on a social media account supporting Wagner.
