The US government on Wednesday formally declared that Russia’s armed forces had committed war crimes in Ukraine, weeks after indecision about the same.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the announcement on Wednesday, saying, “Today, I can announce that, based on information currently available, the U.S. government assesses that members of Russia’s forces have committed war crimes in Ukraine.”

“Our assessment is based on a careful review of available information from public and intelligence sources,” Blinken added, explaining how the Biden administration reached the conclusion.

“As with any alleged crime, a court of law with jurisdiction over the crime is ultimately responsible for determining criminal guilt in specific cases. The U.S. government will continue to track reports of war crimes and will share information we gather with allies, partners, and international institutions and organizations, as appropriate. We are committed to pursuing accountability using every tool available, including criminal prosecutions,” Blinken further said.

The official declaration comes days after US President Joe Biden flatly called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin a war criminal, after weeks of indecision about whether to label Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians as war crimes.

Blinken’s announcement also comes days after he declared that the US government had recognized the actions of Myanmar’s military against the minority Rohingya community as genocide and crimes against humanity.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Kyiv has repeatedly accused Russian forces of being guilty of war crimes, citing attacks on hospitals to the abduction of elected officials from Ukrainian cities.

Kyiv’s claims are in part backed by data too, as the United Nations (UN) has also put out an estimate saying that at least 900 civilians have been killed since the beginning of the invasion and that at least 6.5 million people have been displaced.
