A barrage of missiles rained down on the city of Erbil in Iraq on Saturday night, nearly striking the US embassy.

Footage of the strike, believed to be carried out by Iran, was uploaded and widely circulated on social media, and showed at least five projectiles hitting the city.

While it is unclear whether the strike was carried out by Iran, independent open source intelligence (OSINT) accounts on social media geolocated videos and photos showing missiles being launched from the Khasabad military base in the East Azerbaijan Province in Iran.

A journalist from the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation also claimed that the missiles that had battered Erbil were Fateh-110 surface-to-surface missiles used by Iran.

At the time of writing, no civilian deaths or injuries had been reported from the strikes, and US officials have told Reuters that there have been no casualties on the US side either.

“No victims or casualties after Erbil blasts,” Saman Barzanji, health minister in Iraq’s Kurdistan Province, reportedly said on state television.

The attack on Erbil comes three days after two Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps members were reportedly killed by Israeli airstrikes in Syria, and several OSINT accounts have also claimed that the strike on Erbil was carried out by Iran in retaliation to the deaths of the two soldiers.

If Iran is indeed responsible for the strikes close to the US embassy, it would mark a dramatic escalation in the region and is perhaps even likely to trigger a US response. However, responsibility for the strikes has not been conclusively determined as of now.
