A gunman killed at least 13 people and injured more than 21 on Monday afternoon at a school in Izhevsk, Russia. The unidentified gunman, who was wearing a t-shirt with Nazi symbols, later killed himself, officials said.

Alexander Brechalov, the Governor of Izhevsk, said that at least five of the victims were children, according to news agency Associated Press.

Where is Izhevsk?

Izhevsk is the capital city of Udumurtiya, which is located in west-central Russia. It is on the western edges of the Ural mountain range and is about 960 kilometers (600 miles) east of Moscow.

It was established as a center of ironworking and later, armaments. And the city remains to be a major producer of steel, armaments, machine tools, motorcycles, and building machinery. A large automobile plant is also stationed in the city.

The industrially well-equipped city is the cultural, commercial, political, and educational hub of Udmurtiya. A scientific institute for the Udmurt language, literature, and history is also located in the city.

Izhevsk was formerly named Ustinov after Dmitry Ustinov – the late Soviet Minister of Defence. Now, the city is headed by Oleg Bekmemetyev and its governing body is located in Duma.

The city is known for its defence, engineering and metallurgy industries. Having a population of around 6,40,000, people from more than 100 ethnicities reside here. These include Russians, Udmurts, Tatars, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Mari, Armenians, Jews, Germans, Bakshirs, and Chuvash.

The country is considered to be an essential economic center of the Udmurt Republic. Izhmash, a local enterprise that manufactures small arms and assault rifles in the military industry, is among the significant enterprises in Russia.

Izhevsk has a humid continental climate, which means it has long cold winters and warm summers. The city has some of the most popular museums and galleries like The Gerd National Museum and The Izhmash Museum.
