A writer and expert on war crimes passed away from wounds sustained in a Russian missile strike in eastern Ukraine earlier this week, according to PEN Ukraine.

Following the attack on a well-liked pizza joint in Kramatorsk on Tuesday night, it was revealed that Victoria Amelina, who had been dining there with a group of writers and journalists from Colombia, was among the injured.

Hector Abad Faciolince, a Colombian author, and Sergio Jaramillo, a former High Commissioner for Peace, were present in the restaurant with Victoria Amelina. They had started the #AguantaUcrania campaign with other writers to show solidarity for the Ukrainian people in Latin America. They had only minor wounds.

The journalist Catalina Gomez, who has been following the Russian invasion of Ukraine for France 24 since it started, was also present and rode in an ambulance with Victoria to the hospital.

Sergio and Hector travelled to Ukraine to aid the . There was no danger to their life.

Amelina had been working with Ukrainian teams since 2022 to compile evidence of Russian war crimes and to promote holding the Russian Federation and its military accountable for their crimes in Ukraine. She also joined the War and Justice Diary: Looking at Women Looking at War non-fiction initiative.

PEN Ukraine stated that despite physicians’ best efforts to save her, her injuries turned out to be “fatal and incompatible with life.” She was 37 years old. The missile hit left at least 60 people injured and at least 13 people dead, including a set of twins aged 14 years old.

There were no military objects that may have been a legitimate target for the bombing on that day, according to PEN Ukraine and war crimes watchdog Truth Hounds, in a previous statement that revealed Amelina was among those hurt in the attack.

According to the statement, Amelina had frequently accompanied both factions to the frontlines of the conflict. Victoria is currently a war crime victim herself.
