After hurling red paint at a Monet artwork and afterwards taping themselves to the frame, two women were arrested in Stockholm, Sweden, on Wednesday. One of them was Emma Johanna Fritzdotter.

Who is Emma Johanna Fritzdotter?

Not much is known about Emma Johanna Fritzdotter other than the fact that she is from the environmentalist group Restore Wetlands. On June 14, 2022, Fritzdotter and another woman were captured on camera adhering to a Monet artwork at the National Museum in Stockholm and covering it in red paint.

The women, according to the organisation, took these measures to put pressure on the Swedish government to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“The situation is urgent. As a nurse, I refuse to watch. The pandemic was nothing compared to the climate collapse. It’s about life or death. Fritzdotter in a news release, exclaimed.”

“People won’t just die from heat stroke. New diseases will spread, and we cannot even imagine the extent of this,” she stated.

Police were called, according to the museum, after the two women taped themselves to Monet’s “The Artist’s Garden at Giverny.” The picture was on display in a show called “The Garden – Six Centuries of Art and Nature.” It was protected by glass.

Per Hedström, the museum’s acting director general, issued a statement saying, “We distance ourselves from actions where art or cultural heritage are put at risk of damage. Cultural heritage has great symbolic value and it is unacceptable to attack or destroy it, for any purpose whatsoever.”
