Melanie Joly is a lawyer and politician from Canada who has been the Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2021. She is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada and has been involved in politics at both the municipal and federal levels.

Joly’s political career began at the municipal level when she ran for mayor of Montreal in 2013. Although she was not successful in that election, her campaign garnered significant attention and propelled her to the federal stage.

In 2015, Melanie Joly successfully ran for a seat in the House of Commons in the Canadian federal election. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding of Ahuntsic-Cartierville in Quebec.

Following the election, Joly was appointed to serve in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet. She was given the role of Minister of Canadian Heritage, which includes responsibility for culture, heritage, and official languages.

During her time in office, Joly has also been involved in discussions and initiatives related to issues such as the media landscape, access to Canadian content, and the promotion of bilingualism in Canada.

Félix Marzell is the husband of Melanie Joly.

Marzell is the co-founder of Dix au carré, a research and development laboratory specializing in creative design projects, along with David Barabé.

Félix and David have undertaken projects in their 4,500 square foot Montreal studio that combine creative creativity and performance technology at the request of artists, representatives of the entertainment industry, and companies from all around the world. Dix au Carré solves a client’s creative problem and takes it from concept to completion using a variety of materials such as wood, plastic, metal, and composite.

Joly and Marzell have a 4 to 5 year age difference.

Melanie was the first Quebecker to receive the Arnold Edinborough Award in 2010, which recognises philanthropic contributions in the Canadian cultural community.
