According to security sources, President Mohamed Bazoum is being held by Niger presidential guards within the presidential palace, which is now cordoned off by military vehicles.

Mohamed Bazoum has served in various ministerial positions in the Nigerien government. He has held roles such as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of State for the Interior, and Minister of State for Planning.

Bazoum,  studied philosophy at the University of Dakar’s faculty of letters and human sciences from 1979 to 1984. He later earned a master’s degree in political and moral philosophy and a certification in studies (DEA), with a logic and epistemology option.

He joined the National Union of Teachers of Niger (SNEN) trade union operations after leaving school, and he later joined the executive office of the Trade Union of Workers of Niger (USTN), which he also represented at the National Conference in 1991.

Bazoum also served as the President of the National Assembly of Niger from 2016 to 2021. As the head of the legislative body, he played a crucial role in shaping the country’s laws and policies.

In the 2020 Nigerien presidential election, Mohamed Bazoum ran as the candidate of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS-Tarayya). He won the election and was sworn in as the President of Niger in April 2021.
