Liz Cheney is the top Republican on the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Cheney literally went against all of her GOP colleagues to help lead the probe.

When protestors breached the Capitol last year, Cheney was the third highest-ranking House Republican.

Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin, who was preparing his remarks to certify the 2020 election results, saw texts about the threat and went to Cheney on the House floor.

“She was actually the first person that I went to when someone texted me a photo of the insurrectionists who had entered the building brandishing a Confederate battle flag, and I crossed the aisle and I said, ‘Liz, look, it looks like we’re under new management here,'” Raskin told NPR.

The Madison, Wisconsin-born, the elder of two daughters of former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Second Lady Lynne Cheney. She has been the US representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district since 2017.

She chaired the House Republican Conference from 2019 to 2021. She held several positions in the US State Department during the George W. Bush administration. Her notable roles included Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and Coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives.

In 2009, Cheney and Bill Kristol founded Keep America Safe, a nonprofit organization concerned with national security issues.

She was a candidate for the 2014 election to the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, challenging three-term incumbent Mike Enzi, before withdrawing from the race.

In the House of Representatives, she holds the seat her father held from 1979 to 1989.

Cheney was among those who supported the second impeachment of Donald Trump for his role in the 2021 storming of the Capitol.

Before attending law school, Cheney worked for the State Department for five years and the United States Agency for International Development between 1989 and 1993.

The 55-year-old is married to Philip Perry, a partner at Latham & Watkins. They were married in Wyoming in 1993. She and Perry have five children.
