Mohamed Nasheed, former president of Maldives, was injured on Thursday night in a bomb blast near his home. Currently the speaker of parliament, Mohamed Nasheed underwent a surgery on Friday.

Nasheed became the speaker of the Maldives parliament in April last year after his party’s landslide victory.

Nasheed became Maldives’s first democratically elected president in 2008 after the first multi-party elections in the island nation.

The 53-year-old was toppled in a coup in 2012. He convicted of criminal charges of terrorism and was jailed for 13 years after which he could not contest the 2018 presidential elections.

He left the Maldives on prison leave for medical treatment and sought refuge in Britain and return in 2018 after Solih, his nominee, won the presidency.
