Steve Borthwick took over the mantle of the English national rugby team from Eddie Jones after an announcement on Monday. The Six Nations’ championship beginning in February will be his first major assignment and Sam Underhill and George Ford are said to return to the team.
“I’m deeply honoured to be appointed England head coach and I am very excited by the challenge. The English game is full of talent and I want to build a winning team which makes the most of our huge potential and inspires young people to fall in love with rugby union the way I did,” said the newly appointed English coach.

Who is Steve Borthwick?
Stephen William Borthwick is a former rugby professional and the current coach of the English national team. Borthwick was born on January 2 at Carlisle, Cumbria in England. He joined the Bath college team and played his first match against the Saracens.

Borthwick balanced rugby and his studies for five years during which, he also made his national side debut for England in 2000. He was pursuing a graduate programme at the University of Bath and graduated in 2003 with a degree in economics with politics. After a successful stint at the Bath team which included leading the side as captain to victory in the 2007-08 European Challenge Cup. He left the team in 2008

He then moved onto Saracen F.C. where he was a part of the squad that won the premiership title in 2010-11 season. He was part of England’s World Cup team in 2007 and became the side’s captain in 2008. While his national team career ended in 2010, he went on to play for the Saracens for four more years before finally retiring in 2014.
Brothwick has been a professional coach since 2012 and was Leicester Tigers‘ coach from 2019. On December 19 2022, it was announced that he is the new coach of England.
