Renowned British Novelist Martin Amis passed away at the age of 73 on Friday. His family confirmed the cause of death to be oesophagus cancer. His wife Isabella confirmed he died at his home in Florida.

Amis was named among the popular novelists, and his works were critically acclaimed that depicted British literary scenarios in the ‘80s. 

He was married to Antonia Phillips.

Who was Antonia Phillips?

Antonia Phillips was the first wife of novelist Martin Amis. They were married in 1984 and were separated in 1993. She was the mother of his two sons, Jacob and Louis.

Amis was born in Oxford in 1949 to his mother Hilary Bardwell and his father, Kingsley Amis who was also a writer.

He graduated with First Class Honours in English from Exeter College, Oxford, before publishing his first novel, The Rachel Papers, in 1973, which earned him a Somerset Maugham Award the following year. Amis was frequently compared to his father, Kingsley Amis, who won the Booker Prize for The Old Devils in 1986.

In his memoir Experience, published in 2000, Amis wrote about his father’s death. Amis’ divorce from his first wife and mother of his two sons, American academic Antonia Phillips, is discussed in the book.

The Booker Prize sympathised with the demise of Amis and said, “We are saddened to hear that Martin Amis, one of the most acclaimed and discussed novelists of the past 50 years, has died”.
