Veteran broadcaster Robbie Shepherd, who hosted Take the Floor on BBC Radio Scotland for 35 years, has died. He was 87 years old at the time of his death.

The longest-running radio show produced in Scotland was taken over by Gary Innes after Robbie left his position in 2016. Gary paid tribute to his predecessor on Twitter after hearing the tragic news.

“I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Robbie Shepherd MBE,” he began. “Robbie was an incredible man, musician, and champion of the Doric language. A true legend and until we meet again ma man, “aw the best till then”.”

Who was Robbie Shepherd?

Robert Horne Shepherd MBE was a Scottish broadcaster and author. He was well-known for hosting programs on BBC Radio Scotland and for penning a Doric column for the Press and Journal in Aberdeen.

Robbie Shepherd’s Career:

Robbie Shepherd was an accountant on Union Terrace in Aberdeen during the 1950s. He was also trying his hand at playing the mouth organ as a musician. Following that, he began working as a compère for variety programs. Before transitioning to radio, Shepherd also worked as a producer for theatre productions and variety events.

Robbie took over as host of the BBC Radio Scotland program Take the Floor in 1980 and continued to do so until 2016. He also presented episodes of The Beechgrove Garden and Sheepdog trials on television for BBC Scotland, as well as hosted The Reel Blend, once again for BBC Radio Scotland. In addition, Shepherd published books about Scottish country dancing and Scottish dance music, two of his well-known interests.

Shepherd spoke Doric, a dialect used in the northeast of Scotland. He has published books in the Doric language regarding the dialect. He began penning a Doric column for the Press & Journal in April 1993. On July 15, 2023, he published his final article in the column.
