Stepan Latypov, a political activist and a critic of the Belarus government, stabbed himself in an ongoing session of the court on Tuesday during the first day of his trial, according to media reports citing rights group Viasna.

Latypov was reportedly under pressure since his detention and attempted to commit suicide and was taken to the hospital after the incident, reported AFP.

The rights group said he had bruises over his body and climbed up on a court bench and stabbed himself in the neck with what looked like a pen. He took the step following a round of questioning with his father.

“Stepan turned blue and lay down on the bench, an ambulance was called”, reported AFP quoting Viasna.

The Health Ministry of Belarus later clarified that Latypov was in a stable condition and is no longer in danger.
