A Delhi court on Monday asked the
Delhi Police to give copies of the charge sheet related to a 2016 sedition case to Kanhaiya Kumar and nine other former
Jawaharlal Nehru University students. Kumar, who is
the former JNUSU (Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union) president, Umar
Khalid (in police custody currently for Delhi riots), and Anirban Bhattacharya
were accused of raising anti-India slogans, PTI reported.

Seven others listed in the charge
sheet, namely Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea
Rassol, Bashir Bhat and Basharat – all Kashmiri students – were given bail on
April 7 by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma. They had not been
arrested in the case before the filing of the charge sheet.

After moving the court via bail applications,
the court reportedly granted the students bail on a personal bond of Rs 25,000
and the surety of a like amount.

The accused have been charged with
offences under sections 124A (sedition), 323 (punishment for voluntarily
causing hurt), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record),
143 (punishment for being a member of an unlawful assembly), 149 (being a
member of an unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting) and 120B
(criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The students mentioned in the list
were, at the time, studying in JNU, Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Milia
Islamia.

The case was registered on February
11, 2016 under sections 124A and 120B of the Indian Penal Code in Delhi’s
Vasant Kunj Police Station.
