Marion Barber III, former Dallas Cowboys running back, was reportedly found dead in his apartment on Wednesday. The cause of his death was unknown.

Officers with the Frisco Police Department arrived at an apartment owned by Barber on Wednesday for a welfare check. The 38-year-old was found unresponsive in the apartment.

Confirming the news, Dallas Cowboys said in a statement, “We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III.

“Marion was an old school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Barber would have turned 39 on June 10.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the fourth round in 2005. He then spent six seasons with the team. He earned the nickname “Marion the Barbarian,” owing to his hard-hitting, punishing style of running. He then spent one season with the Chicago Bears in 2011. The 38-year-old finished his career with 4,780 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns.

Following his death, several people took to social media to offer condolences.

“Marion Barber III was such an under-appreciated player when he played. He was vintage NFL. A beloved Cowboy by just about every fan. May he Rest In Peace,” one person tweeted.

“Marion Barber III aka Marion the Barbarian…Thank you for all the great football memories and the greatest 2 yard run in this game!! You where beast mode before beast mode was a thing,” wrote another person.

“This is sad to hear. I loved watching Marion Barber III playing dating back to when he was at Minnesota with Laurence Maroney. R.I.P,” another person tweeted.
