The farmers’ protest saw a tense night on Friday, with Bharatiya Kisan Union Spokesperson Rakesh Tikait refusing to give in to local administration’s eviction orders at Ghazipur on Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border.
The over two-month protest by farmers against the Centre’s farm laws seemed to mellow down, with some farmer unions withdrawing their participation.
While police in anti-riot gear gathered in large numbers, asking protesters to vacate the area, farmers refused to move, with Tikait saying, “If anything happens, the police will be responsible. Yahan goli chalegi (Bullet will be fired here).
The stand-off between the protestors and police continued till 3 am following which, Uttar Pradesh Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) deployed left the protest site. Heavy police presence was again seen on Friday early morning.
