Both Israeli forces and Palestinians are witnessing an escalation in violence as at least 30 people died, the worst since 2017, as a year-long land dispute is waged in the Israeli Supreme Court as well as on the streets of the Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Here’s what is happening in East Jerusalem:

Dozens of Palestinians are protesting against eviction from their homes in the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah. They say Israeli forces want to replace it entirely with a Jewish settlement.

On Sunday, a court ruled at least six families must leave their homes by August 1 in Sheikh Jarrah, despite living there for generations.

It started in 1972 when several Jewish settler organisations filed a case against Palestinian families living in Sheikh Jarrah and alleged that the land originally belonged to Jews.

Several Palestinian neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem are also facing the threat of forced displacement.

There have been reports of clash between the security forces and protestors.

According to AFP, 300 people were wounded in renewed clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, the Palestinian Red Crescent said.
