Priyanka Chopra Jonas on Saturday announced that she has launched an Indian restaurant named Sona in New York and that it will serve Indian cuisine. The actor took to social media to post photos of the restaurant and a prayer ceremony that was performed in 2019. She added that the restaurant will open later this month and renowned chef Hari Nayak will be the head chef.
“I’m thrilled to present to you SONA, a new restaurant in NYC that I poured my love for Indian food into. SONA is the very embodiment of timeless India and the flavours I grew up with. The kitchen is helmed by the incredible Chef Hari Nayak, a masterful talent, who has created the most delicious and innovative menu, taking you on a food journey through my amazing country,” she wrote on Instagram.
“SONA is opening later this month, and I can’t wait to see you there! This endeavour would not have been possible without the leadership of my friends Maneesh Goyal and David Rabin. Thank you to our designer Melissa Bowers and the rest of the team for realizing this vision so clearly. The second and third photos were taken in September 2019 when we performed a small intimate Puja (prayer ceremony) to bless the space that would soon become Sona. Godspeed!” she added.
Priyanka is not the first Indian celebrity who is making money in the food industry.
1. Shilpa Shetty: The actor acquired 50% stake in the hospitality group that owns the popular Mumbai restaurant Bastian in 2019. Located in Bandra West, Bastian is also popular among celebrities so don’t be surprised if you bump into a Bollywood star at the eatery.
2. Perizaad Zorabian: Gondola, a multicuisine restaurant in Mumbai, was established by the Zorabian family in the 1970s. Located in Pali Hill in Bandra, the restaurant is popular for serving delicious seafood and Indian cuisine.
3. Arjun Rampal: The model-turned-actor was one of the first Indian celebrities to venture into the industry. Launched in 2009, Lap, which is located in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area, is a popular hangout that is known for luxurious interiors and amazing ambiance.
4. Chunky Pandey: The Elbo Room, an Italian bistro owned by the actor, is a popular eatery in Mumbai. Located in Khar, the restaurant is known for cocktails and sangrias and the happy hours manage to attract a lot of people.
