Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator, director, and writer of ‘Squid Game‘ confirmed that two key characters will return for the second instalment of the Korean drama that quickly shot to the top spot on Netflix.
As per Deadline, Hwang and actor Park Hae-soo discussed what fans could expect from the new instalment. Hwang said, “Gi-hun for sure. He will be back and I believe the Front Man will back too”.
While one expected these characters to return, Hwang’s statement confirms it. Lee Jung-jae, the SAG award winner, plays Gi-hun. He’s the protagonist who survives the batch of deadly games, which lends its title to the series, and whose return is teased at the tail end of Season 1.

Meanwhile, Front Man reappears as the brooding boss, and the prime antagonist of the series where players strapped for cash are thrown into deadly competitions with a chance to walk away with a life-altering cash prize.
Earlier, the show’s creator had also teased Deadline that HoYeon Jung would return, but not as the North Korean refugee who contests the games. She’s slated to return as the evil twin.
At the time, Jung had jokingly said “I could change the colour of my hair”, adding, “Let’s try something a little like plastic surgery”.
Shooting to the top of popularity lists worldwide was a nice surprise for Hwang Dong-hyuk, who told Variety that he couldn’t anticipate the heights of success ‘Squid Game‘ would reach.
“Yeah, in a way, because who can expect this kind of success?” I worked hard to put on a successful show, but I never expected it to be this successful. It’s unexpected”, the show creator explained.

‘Squid Game’ Season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but Hwang is aiming for a release by the end of 2024. Before the new instalment, he has a film – ‘Killing Old People Club’ – in the pipeline. Hwang has touted the movie to be controversial, and more violent than ‘Squid Game’.
