Prannoy’s winning streak at the Swiss Open 2022 came to end when he went down
to Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in straight games (12-21, 18-21) in the summit
clash of the BWF Super 300 tournament at the St. Jakobshalle arena on Sunday.
The match lasted for 48 minutes.

In
the first game, World No. 1 Christie started in attacking mode and grained four
quick points against Prannoy’s one point. The Indian shuttler fought back to
win four successive points to take a 5-4 lead. At one point into the first
game, the World No. 26 Indian extended his lead to 7-5 but then the Indonesian
made a comeback in the game and took a brisk 12-8 lead. Prannoy’s unforced
errors cost him heavily as Christie raced to a 20-10 lead. The Indian finally
managed to acquire two points but Christie got enough lead to seal the first
game 21-12.

In
the second game, Prannoy started cautiously and acquired seven quick points but
at the same time, he conceded as many points to an aggressive Christie, who won
four consecutive points to take an 11-7 lead. Trailing 9-13 the Indian made a
comeback to make it 13-13. After that, the Indonesian World No.8 upped the ante
and overpowered Prannoy to take a 20-15 lead. The 29-year-old Prannoy then
secured three consecutive points but it was too late for him to stage a
fightback as Jonatan Christie won the second game 21-18 and claim the men’s
single title of Swiss Open Super 300.

Earlier,
PV Sindhu notched up her second women’s singles title of the season with a
straight-game win over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Playing her second
successive final in the tournament, Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, took
49 minutes to get the better of the fourth-seeded Thai 21-16 21-8. Earlier this
year Sindhu won the Syed Modi International badminton tournament.

It
was, meanwhile, Sindhu’s 16th win over Busanan in 17 meetings, having lost to
the Thai only once — at the 2019 Hong Kong Open.
