Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates those who lost their lives in the Holocaust. However, this year, there was a distinct warning about antisemitic feelings being on the rise, even as Holocaust denial enters narratives.
Inge Auerbacher, a Holocaust survivor, told the German parliament, “Unfortunately, this cancer has reawakened and hatred of Jews is commonplace again in many countries in the world, including Germany. This sickness must be healed as quickly as possible”.
The World Jewish Congress and UNESCO have also announced a partnership to tackle Holocaust denial. While most events were held online this year too, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, small commemorations took place at the former Auschwitz camp, and Rome among other places.
