Born on June 10, 1895, in Wichita, Kansas, to former slaves, Hattie McDaniel was the youngest of 13 children. Her father fought in the Civil War and her mother was a singer of religious music. The family moved to Colorado in 1900. 

Hattie McDaniel made her acting debut as a maid in the 1932 movie ‘The Golden West’. She is best known for her role in the 1939 movie ‘Gone with the Wind’ for which she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She became the first African American actress to win an Academy Award. 

Over the course of her career, the actor appeared in more than 300 movies, although she received screen credits for only 80 of them. 

The actor has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Hollywood: one for her contributions to radio at 6933 Hollywood Boulevard, and the other for motion pictures at 1719 Vine Street.

She was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1975 and in 2006, she became the first black Oscar winner honored with a US postage stamp.
