India recorded 28,204 new COVID-19 cases and 373 deaths in the last 24 hours, data from the Union Ministry of Health confirmed on Tuesday. India’s infection tally now stands at 3,19,98,158, with the death toll pushed to 4,28,682. 

The daily new cases reported on Tuesday is the lowest such tally in 147 days. 

Active cases declined by 13,680 to 3,88,508. Active cases are at their lowest levels in 139 days. They comprise 1.21% of the country’s total caseload, the lowest since March 2020. 

41,511 patients recovered from the inection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,11,80,968. The country’s recovery rate stands at 97.45%.

The government administered a total of 54,91,647 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in the last 24 hours, with India’s total vaccination count currently standing at 51,45,00,268. 

Data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed a total of 15,11,313 samples were tested for COVID-19 on Monday. A total of 48,32,78,545 samples have been tested so far.

The weekly
positivity rate currently stands at 2.36%, while the daily positivity rate has
stayed below 3% for the last 15 days and is currently at 1.87%.

India’s COVID-19 caseload crossed the 20 lakh-mark on August 7 last year, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one crore-mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4 and 3 crore on June 23 this year.

India’s caseload of over 3.19 crore cases is the second-highest in the world, behind only the United States’ 3.6 crore. The country’s death toll of over 4.28 lakh is the third-highest in the world, behind only the US (more than 6.17 lakh) and Brazil (more than 5.63 lakh).
