Jasprit Bumrah smashed 35 runs against Stuart Broad on Day 2 of the ongoing fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday to break West Indies legend Brian Lara’s 19-year-old record for most runs scored in an over in the history of Test cricket. Bumrah hit two massive sixes, four boundaries, and a single and was helped with five wides.

Lara, who hit 28 runs off left-arm spinner Robin Peterson in a Test match against South Africa at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in 2003, reacted to Bumrah breaking his record. 

“Join me in congratulating the young @Jaspritbumrah93 on breaking the record of Most Runs in a Single Over in Tests. Well done!” he tweeted.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri said he was stunned with Jasprit Bumrah’s world record against Broad.

“It’s something I’ve never imagined. The world record, from Jasprit Bumrah, batting at number 10, as captain of India, for the first time. Going past Brian Lara, George Bailey, Keshav Maharaj. 29 off the over (off his bat). The bowler the same as Yuvraj hit for six sixes, Stuart Broad. The entire over for 35, again a world record,” he said. 

“You feel you have seen everything, but you must realize you’re still a student of the game. Something will surprise you on another day, but what I saw today was something absolutely bizarre. Jasprit Bumrah, breaking the world record, getting 29 off his bat, in a 35 run over!”

Bumrah also picked up three crucial wickets of Alex Lees, Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope on Day 2.
