In the aftermath of a landmark decision by the Supreme Court, US President Joe Biden put pen on paper on an executive order, aimed towards protecting abortion rights in the country on Friday.

The executive order came when the judiciary body overturned the Roe vs Wade case.

According to the President, the order is aimed at safeguarding the access to abortion care, contraceptives, secure patient privacy and create an interagency task force to use “every federal tool available to protect access to reproductive health care.”

The executive order will mitigate a few penalties women looking at abortion might face, however, it is unable to restore acess to the procedure across all states.

“The fastest way to restore Roe is to pass a national law,” Biden stated. “The challenge is go out and vote. For God’s sake there is an election in November!” he added.

Biden also described the Supreme Court decision as ‘outrageous’ and ‘dangerous’. “It’s outrageous. I don’t care what your position is, it’s outrageous and it’s dangerous,” he opined.

The executive order also mandates agencies to educate medical practitioners and related staff regarding when to share privileged patient information to authorities.

“President Biden has made clear that the only way to secure a woman’s right to choose is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe as federal law,” the White House said in a statement.

“Until then, he has committed to doing everything in his power to defend reproductive rights and protect access to safe and legal abortion,” it added.

The executive director of the White House Gender Policy Council, Jen Klein, has revealed that the White House is looking at all possibilities to restore access to abortion in the country.

According to a report by CNN, HHS secretary Xavier Becerra will be prompted to secure access to abortion following the presidential executive order. The steps will also include ‘FDA-approved medication abortion’ as well as access “to the full range of reproductive health services.”

The HHS will also be submitting a report to President Biden by next month about the implementation of the mandates of the executive order.
