The line-up of releases for the 79th edition of the Venice
Film Festival has been announced, and with Venice being one of the
most influential film festivals around the globe, some of the biggest names in
the world of cinema will be releasing their works at the event, eyeing its
topmost prize, the Golden Lion.

The opening film for this year is set to be Noah Baumbach’s ‘White
Noise’, a film that will see the 52-year-old screenwriter-director renew his
collaboration with his real-life partner Greta Gerwig. Despite shifting to direction,
Gerwig will be here seen donning her actor’s hat for ‘White Noise’, where she
will star opposite Adam Driver. The ‘Barbie’ director had first burst onto the
scene as an actor with her brilliant performance in Baumbach’s 2012 comedy-drama,
‘Frances Ha’.

Alejandro González Inarritu, the third person to win consecutive
Academy Awards as a director, is also set to premiere his Spanish-language
film, ‘Bardo, Falsa Crónica De Unas Cuantas Verdades’ or ‘Bardo, False
Chronicle of a Handful of Truths’, at Venice 2022. ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’,
a Martin McDonagh directorial, is one of the most anticipated releases of the
festival. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, the actors who created magic in ‘In
Bruges’ under McDonagh’s direction back in 2007, are set to collaborate once
again in the film with the 52-year-old filmmaker.

Darren Arronofsky’s ‘The Whale’, which will be starring Brendan
Fraser of ‘The Mummy’ fame, is another major attraction. ‘The Souvenir’ director
Joanna Hogg will also be eyeing the top prize with her new venture, ‘The Eternal
Daughter’, a mystery-drama film starring Carly-Sophia Davies and Tilda Swinton.

Cate-Blanchett-starrer ‘Tár’, a biographical film on legendary
orchestra conductor Lydia Tár, along with the much-talked-about Marilyn Monroe
biopic, ‘Blonde’, where Ana de Armas will portray the American screen icon, will
also be entering into competition.

Venice is also set to witness the premiere of ‘No Bears’, the
new feature by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who was recently sentenced to
jail for a period of six years for enquiring about fellow Iranian filmmakers
Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Aleahmad post their detainment. Panahi, post his
arrest, has been sentenced to a six-year jail sentence.

The Golden Lion was awarded to Audrey Diwan’s ‘Happening’
last year, and in the 79th edition of the festival, the jury of
which will be headed by Julianne Moore, there are once again some extremely worthy
competitors. The Floating City will surely have to offer a lot of cinematic
brilliance once the festival kicks off on August 31.
