The good old early 2000s are back, thanks to Hollywood actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who are bringing Barbie and Ken to life.

Barbie, the doll created by Ruth Handler in 1959, and Ken, the blonde fashion icon’s counterpart created by Elliot Handler in 1961, will be making their debut on the silver screen in Oscar-winning filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s next film.

The film, titled ‘Barbie’, will feature Robbie and Gosling as Barbie and Ken, respectively.

The production began in March 2022, with England as the shooting location. Since then, behind-the-scenes images of the actors sporting bright fluorescent outfits and cruising through the streets in a hot pink vehicle have been widely shared on social media.

According to a report by Newsweek, ‘Barbie’ will also star Will Ferrell, Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Hari Nef,  Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera and Scott Evans.

Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ is the first live-action flick based on the doll after multiple shows and animated movies. While most of its plot has been kept under the wraps, Margot Robbie assured viewers that they are in for a treat.

“We like the things that feel a little left of center. Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders,” she added.

While the film’s release date has not been officially announced yet, it is slated to hit theatres on July 21, 2023.
