Brahmastra: Part One Shiva landed in theatres on Friday and saw a bumper opening. The 410-crore film, the most expensive Bollywood film ever made, was hopeful of getting audiences back to theatres. While it’s still early to say if that goal has been realised, Brahmastra producer Karan Johar said Saturday that the film collected Rs 75 crore worldwide on its opening.
The Ayan Mukherji-directorial starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt begins what the film’s makers are calling an ‘Astraverse’. The ‘Astraverse’ brings the Marvel and DC logic of multiple universes in the Indian cinematic framework.
The myth of the Astraverse states that India’s sages possessed seven Astras, the biggest of which is the Brahmastra, defined in the film as ‘Astro Ke Devta,’ meaning ‘God of the Astras,’ which has the power to destroy the world. Here is a quick look at all seven Astras in the Astraverse:
Vanarastra: As the name suggests, the possessor of the Vanarastra is able to jump and climb with the agility of an anthropoid. The Vanarastra is shaped like an anklet and is worn by the character played by Shah Rukh Khan, who plays the character of Mohan Bhargava, SRK’s character name in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swadesh.
Nandi Astra: Nandi Astra transfers the strength of a thousand bulls to the wearer. Named after Lord Shiva’s vahan (vehicle), the character is played by Nagarjuna. The South Indian superstar wears the Nandi Astra as a bracelet to fight evil forces.
Prabhastra: Prabhastra is the sword of light. The possessor of the weapon is Guru, who resides in a guarded ashram in the foothills of the Himalaya. The character is played by Amitabh Bachchan who mentors Ranbir Kapoor’s character Shiva and helps him channelise his inner powers.
Jal Astra: Jal Astra represents the power of water. The first film of the trilogy does not reveal who possesses the Jal Astra. There exists speculation that Deepika Padukone might play the role, although the film does not reveal the same.
Agni Astra: Agni Astra is the weapon of fire. Ranbir Kapoor possesses the Agni Astra in the film. The trailers of the film show Ranbir, playing the character Shiva, unable to control fire and is able to control fire at will.
