Tua Tagovailoa returned from the horrific head injury that he suffered against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4, against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7, on Sunday, October 23. The quarterback met with rounding applauses from fans in the stadium as he made his way into the field ahead of the game.

Who is Tua Tagovailoa?

Tua Tagovailoa is an American football player who plays the quarterback position for the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League. He was drafted fifth overall in 2020 NFL Draft. 

Tagovailoa was born on March 2, 1998 in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. He attended the Saint Louis School in Honolulu. before enrolling at the University of Alabama in 2017 to play college football.

College Career: 

Throughout the 2017 season, Tagovailoa served as the backup quarterback to sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts. On September 9, he made his collegiate debut in a home game against Fresno State, which the team won 41-10. He went 6-of-9 for 64 yards and scored his first career passing touchdown, a 16-yard pass. He threw the game-winning 41-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DeVonta Smith in overtime as the Crimson Tide defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 26-23 to win their 17th National Championship. He finished the game 14-of-24 for 166 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, with 27 yards rushing on 12 attempts.

He finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting to Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray in his sophomore season, finishing with 43 passing touchdowns and 5 rushing touchdowns. He scored four passing touchdowns and threw one interception for 418 yards in a 46-41 loss to LSU in 2019, making it one of his most memorable games in college.

NFL Career: 

He was drafted in the first round as the fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins and later signed a four-year and $30 million rookie contract. 

In his rookie season, he played in 10 games and started 9 as he ended the year with 11 passing and 3 rushing TDs but also threw 5 interceptions.

Next year, he featured in 13 games, including a win against the New England Patriots in the final game of the season, making him 3-0 against the team which is managed by legendary head coach Bill Belichick.

In the 2022 NFL season, In Week 2, Tagovailoa threw for 469 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions in a 42-38 comeback win over the Baltimore Ravens. Tagovailoa was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2 as a result of his performance.
