Winnipeg, the capital city of the province of Manitoba, Canada will have its municipal election on Wednesday where voters will decide on the next mayor, city councillors and school trustees.

Here is all you need to know about the upcoming elections.

What time does voting open?

Polling stations will remain open for 12 hours, starting at 8:00 am in the morning up until 8:00 pm in the evening. However, staff at the centers will get there at around 6:30-7:00 in the morning to ensure that the polling booths will be ready to go, according to a report from CTV Morning Live who spoke to Marc Lemoine, a city clerk and senior election official.

How many polling booths are there?

There are 198 polling  booths set up across the city, according to the CTV report and the city has hired 2,000 people to help staff them.

What documents are needed to vote?

Eligible voters will have likely received a card that tells them which polling booths they should be going to. For those that did not receive such a card, they can either check where they are supposed to vote online or call the 311 helpline for guidance. 

Winnipeggers will need to carry ID to the voting booths. This can be either one piece of government-issued ID that must have a voter’s home address, photo and name. Alternatively, voters can bring two original pieces of government-recognised ID which show both name and address. If two are being brought, then at least one of them must show your current address and both must show your name.

How many people are going to be voting?

The city expects more people to come out to vote this year than the year before. Lemoine told CTV that over 42,000 Winnipeggers stepped out to vote for the advance polls, compared to the 39,000 in 2018.
