What are the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards?
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ (NATAS) Daytime Emmy Awards typically covered the majority of Emmy Awards given for children’s television. The Outstanding Young Adult Series category was also added to the 48th Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
A non-competitive award for Outstanding Children’s Program was presented at the Primetime Emmy Awards by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS, commonly known as the Television Academy), and it was open to numerous nominees who received a certain number of votes from Academy members.

The Television Academy retired this category in 2020, citing confusion caused by the rise of streaming services regarding whether children’s programming belonged in the Daytime or Primetime awards. The category had already been changed to exclude primetime specials and spin-offs of daytime children’s programming.
The Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, a brand-new award ceremony for children’s and family television, were announced by NATAS on November 17, 2021. As grounds for a dedication ceremony, the group noted an “explosive growth in the quantity and quality of children’s and family programming.” Seven new categories for preschool television shows will also be included in the list of categories for the presentation.

The ceremony’s advent is a part of a larger re-alignment of the Primetime and Daytime Emmy Awards’ eligibility requirements that will start to take place in 2022, with the ceremonies’ eligibility now based more on themes and stylistic traits than the dayparts where a programme airs on linear television.
The official opening ceremony is slated for December 11, 2022. LeVar Burton will be honoured as the organization’s first Lifetime Achievement award. The nominees for the inaugural ceremony were released publicly on November 1, 2022.
