Bret Taylor announced on Wednesday, November 30, that he will step down as co-CEO of Salesforce on January 31. He co-founded the cloud software company in 1999. His exit leaves Marc Benioff alone at the top.

Taylor joined the company through a sale of his productivity software startup Quip in 2016. Taylor played a key role in the company’s largest transaction ever, which was its $27.1 billion acquisition of Slack.

“I am grateful for six fantastic years at Salesforce,” Taylor said in a statement on Wednesday. “Marc was my mentor well before I joined Salesforce and the opportunity to partner with him to lead the most important software company in the world is career-defining. After a lot of reflection, I’ve decided to return to my entrepreneurial roots. Salesforce has never been more relevant to customers, and with its best-in-class management team and the company executing on all cylinders, now is the right time for me to step away.”

In 2003, Taylor was hired by Google as an associate product manager. He co-created Google Maps as part of the company. He left Google in June 2007 to join venture capital firm Benchmark Capital.

There, along with several other former Google employees founded the social network web site FriendFeed. Taylor was CEO of FriendFeed until August 2009, when the company was acquired by Facebook. After the acquisition, Taylor joined Facebook and became CTO in 2010.

In 2012, Taylor left Facebook to create Quip, a competitor to Google Docs. In 2016, Quip was acquired by Salesforce. That year, Twitter, Inc. appointed Taylor to its board of directors.
