Harry Kane tied with England legend Wayne Rooney as the country’s highest goal-scorer – at 53. The Three Lions skipper scored from the spot against France in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarter-final on Saturday.

Given a chance for a penalty on the 55th minute, Kane promptly drove the ball into the nets and caught up with Rooney.
The 29-year-old British skipper has been one of the most successful strikers of all time for the side. He scored a whopping six goals for the Brits in the 2018 World Cup that saw him walk home with the golden boot in the tournament.

However, Kane was still at 19 goals after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. His form continued as he soon scored hat-tricks over Bulgaria and Montenegro in 2019. He also scored a third against Albania in the World Cup qualifier in 2021.

With 51 international goals in his kitty, the Tottenham Hotspur player entered the World Cup needing just two to catch up to Rooney. Despite going goalless in the group stages, Kane opened his account with a goal against Senegal. His penalty versus France took him to 53 while it equalised the score 1-1 for Gareth Southgate‘s side against France.
While the score line was identical, so were the statistics. Oliver Giroud, tied at the time with Thierry Henry as France’s top goalscorer got an opportunity which he converted into a goal through a header as France raced to a 2-1 lead.

Harry Kane got a similar opportunity, albeit a more direct one as he earned a second penalty. However, by sending the ball over the goal post, not only did Kane fail to become the Three Lions’ all time high scorer but more significantly, he denied his country their last chance of a comeback as France promptly raced into the semi-finals.
