Fans at Levi’s Stadium chanted Brock Purdy’s name as NFL 2022’s Mr. Irrelevant put up an impressive performance for the San Francisco 49ers against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Mr. Irrelevant of the 2022 NFL season scored his career-first touchdown at Levi’s Stadium. In spite of being only a replacement for the 49er’s first-choice quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, he managed to produce a spectacular performance, as legend Tom Brady watched on from the side.
Purdy, an Arizona native, attended Perry High School and participated in high school football. He enrolled at Iowa State University in 2018 and spent his first year backing up Kyle Kempt and Zeb Noland.
Purdy was selected by the 49ers as the 262nd overall choice in the 2022 NFL Draft. On October 23, 2022, he made his debut during the first quarter of the 49ers’ game against the Kansas City Chief.

The 49ers relied on the 22-year-old to fill the first-choice position on the lineup after Garoppolo went down against the Miami Dolphins last week due to an injury.
Purdy’s first career touchdown pass, a 3-yard completion to former Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, came on December 4, 2022. He then threw another touchdown ball to the team’s fullback Kyle Juszczyk.
At Iowa State University, Purdy received his first start when the starters, Kempt and Noland, were rendered ineffective by injuries. In 220 attempts, he was able to complete 146 of them for 2250 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.
