Students of Class 9-11 will be promoted to the next class without taking exams due to the coronavirus pandemic, said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, in the state legislative assembly on Thursday. He took the decision after the inputs from medical experts, who suggested the situation is not conducive to conduct the SSLC and plus one exam.

Earlier, students of Class 8 were promoted without taking the annual exams.

Classes for Class 9 and 11 in Tamil Nadu resumed on February 8. Students attended the classes have to wear the masks in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and show an acceptance letter from parents that they are willing to send their wards to school, he said. 

According to media reports, schools will be asked to follow the internal assessment system and the marks for the pending examination will be divided into two parameters.

Around 80% of the marks will be evaluated based on the students’ performance in quarterly and half-yearly examinations and 20% will be based on attendance.

The Tamil Nadu Education Department is yet to issue such notice to the schools across the state in this matter.
