Prominent Maine political figure Eliot Cutler was arrested Friday  for possession of child pornography. The arrest came just two days after search warrants were executed at two of his properties.

Cutler has been charged on four counts of possession of unlawful sexually explicit materials Class C, which means subjects are younger than 12-years-old, the Hancock County district attorney reportedly said. The arrest follows a two-month investigation.

The 75-year-old, who ran for governor twice as an independent in 2010 and 2014, was booked into the Hancock County Jail with bail bond set at $50,000. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Cutler’s homes on Pine Street in Portland and on Naskeag Point in Brooklin were searched as part of the probe. Authorities did not reveal any further details about the investigation.

“I can confirm that a two-month investigation has led the Maine State Police to execute search warrants at two separate locations Wednesday morning, March 23,” Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said. “The residences are located at 84 Pine St. in Portland and 523 Naskeag Point Road in Brooklin. Given this is an active and ongoing investigation we are unable to provide any details at this time.”

In 2010, Cutler lost to Republican Paul LePage by less than 2 percentage points. Four years later, he stood third place, behind LePage and Democrat Michael Michaud. In 2014, LePage was able to retain the position of governor of Maine.

Cutler, the oldest son of a prominent doctor and community-minded mother, attended Harvard College, and Georgetown University School of Law.
