Shortly after the cancellation of Batgirl, HBO Max announced that it won’t produce the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. In a series of cancellations, the show from Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and J.J. Abrams is one of six animated titles that have been pulled down by HBO Max.

Other canceled projects include Merry Little Batman, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Toons Movie, Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Toons Musical, Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story, and The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie (working title).

The cancellation of productions and slashing of costs comes ahead of the merger of HBO Max and Discovery Plus which is set to happen next year, thus causing an ideological rift, with the latter focusing more on cost-effective production and film releases rather than streamable content.

However, not all hope is lost as six animated series will continue to hunt for other studios.

Future of Batman

A straight-to-series order for Batman: Caped Crusader was placed in May 2021. According to Deadline, Timm, the producer of “Batman: The Animated Series,” returned to Batman with an animated episodic series that re-interpreted and re-defined the concept of the Batman mythology. This series was originally created by Warner Bros Animation, Bad Robot Productions, and 6th & Idaho.

Batman: Caped Crusader was intended to expand upon Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series, which ran for 85 episodes from 1992 to 1995.

Shortly after the second round of animated project termination announcements, the hashtag #FireDavidZaslav—a dig at the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery—began trending on Twitter. Regardless of what this choice implies for Warner Bros. Discovery, it is safe to tell that the fans are clearly unhappy with it.
