The year 2020 has been marred by the coronavirus pandemic, and so do the movie releases this year. Cinephiles this year moved to OTT platforms to catch the premiere of their favourite films instead of buying movie tickets at theatres. From big-budget movies like Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Laxmii’ to biographical releases like ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’ and ‘Shakuntala Devi’, here is a rewind of some of the best Bollywood movies of 2020:

‘Chhapak’

‘Chhapak’, released on January 10, stars Deepika Padukone in the lead role. The real life story is based on the life of Laxmi Agrawal, who is a survivor of an acid attack, played by Deepika. The movie also stars Vikrant Massey and Madhurjeet Sarghi.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior  

Starring Ajay Devgan, Kajol and Saif Ali Khan, ‘Tanhaji’, a historical-action film, hit Indian theatres on January 10. Set in the 17th century, the movie revolves around the life of Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare and earned Rs 367.65 crore (US$52 million) worldwide. 

‘Thappad’

With Taapsee Pannu in the lead role, ‘Thappad’ got a theatrical release on February 28. The movie makes a unique impression on the audience and was appreciated for taking up the serious issue of domestic abuse. Taapsee’s ‘Thappad’ shows the struggle of an Indian woman struggling to get out of an abusive relationship. 

‘Gulabo Sitabo’

Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushman Khurrana in a Tom-Jerry relationship, Gulabo Sitabo was released on Amazon Prime Video on April 17. The movie revolves around Mirza, played by Bachchan.

‘Angrezi Medium’

The last film of Irrfan Khan, Angrezi Medium left a special mark in the hearts of the late actor’s fans. Angrezi Medium, which also stars Radhika Madam alongside Khan, is the sequel of 2017 film ‘Hindi Medium’. The movie revolves around the struggle of an Indian father to fulfill the wish of her daughter to study in London. ‘Angrezi Medium’ got a theatrical release on March 13, marking as the last film to be released before the coronavirus prompted lockdown was implemented. 

‘Bulbbul’ 

Released on Netflix on June 24, ‘Bulbbul’, starring Tripti Dimri and Avinash Tiwari, has been set in the backdrop of 1880 in Bengal. The movie revolves around child-marriage and the journey of the girl from innocence to strength. Produced by Anushka Sharma, the movie was appreciated in many ways. 

‘Dil Bechara’ 

‘Dil Bechara’ was the last movie of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput and was released on OTT platform more than a month after his death. The movie, which also stars Sanjana Sanghi, is the Hindi remake of Hollywood film ‘The Fault in Our Stars’. ‘Dil Bechara’ was among the biggest OTT releases. 

Shakuntala Devi 

Made on the mathematics genius Shakuntala Devi, the movie of the same name stars Vidya Balan was released on Amazon Prime Video on July 31. 

Balan plays the role of Shakuntala Devi, who was also known as the ‘human computer’, while the biographical comedy-drama movie also starred Jisshu Sengupta, Sanya Malhotra, and Amit Sadh.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl starring Jahnvi Kapoor in the lead role is based on the real life of Gunjan Saxena, who was one of the first Indian female air-force pilots in combat. The biographical drama, which also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in supporting roles, was released on Netflix on August 12.

Laxmii

Starring Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani in lead roles, Laxmii is a horror-comedy movie, a remake of Tamil film Kanchana. The film was earlier slated for a theatrical release in May but was later released on Disney+ Hotstar, becoming the first big-budget Indian film to release on an OTT platform. The movie has got mixed reviews from critics and the audience. 

Ludo

Directed by Anurag Basu, Ludo is a multi-starrer black comedy movie. Ludo, released on November 12 on Netflix, stars an ensemble cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Rajkummar Rao, Sanya Malhotra, Pearle Maaney, Pankaj Tripathi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Suresh Saraf, Saurabh Sharma and Inayat Varma. 

The movie, like a game of Ludo, portrays four stories that become entangled in a series of events eventually leading to a climax where all sides are present.
