Television director Bruce Gowers passed away on January 15, 2023 at the age of 82.

According to his family, the director died in Santa Monica on Sunday after suffering from an acute respiratory infection. Gowers was known for directing the music video for Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The video cemented Queen as one of the biggest rock groups.

He directed nine seasons of reality show American Idol, along with several award shows.

Career

Television director Bruce Gowers has helmed several acclaimed projects, including nine seasons of reality TV show American Idol and the iconic music video for Bohemian Rhapsody by rock band Queen. The video achieved critical acclaim. 

Gowers was born in New Kilbride, Scotland on 21 December 1940. He embarked his career in UK by directing the aforementioned music video to Bohemian Rhapsody, which gained him international recognition. He then began working in the United States in the 1970s.

He has directed several TV shows including the Emmys, The MTV Awards, the Billboard Awards and the American Music Awards, event specials including Live Earth, Live 8. He also directed President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Concert at the Lincoln Memorial. 

He has also done several projects with artists like  Michael Jackson and the Jacksons, the Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart and Britney Spears, directing music special for them. 

Family

Gowers was born to Robert, an educator and Violet, a housewife. His parents were British, but were stationed in New Kilbride, Scotland during the time of World War 2. 

Relationships

Gowers was married to Carol Rosenstein. The two were married in Malibu for 23 years. The couple have two children, Katherine and Sean Gowers.
